Adult Homelessness

Since our founding in 1985, we have collaborated with service providers and system leaders to increase access to shelter. Today, our mission to end and prevent homelessness also strives to achieve a continuum of affordable housing solutions for everyone — from those experiencing homelessness to those a paycheck away from it.

A NOTE ON THE TERMINATION OF POTTINGER

On February 15, 2019, the Pottinger Consent Decree was terminated by a federal district court, citing improvements in the struggle to end homelessness. Since the 1990s, the City of Miami, the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, and our community at large have made great strides in providing homes and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Unsheltered homelessness has been reduced by 90%, veteran homelessness is at a functional zero, and we are making bold strides in ending youth homelessness.

Yet, over 1,000 individuals in Miami-Dade County still sleep in places unfit for human habitation, like sidewalks, cars, or park benches. And every day it becomes harder for our residents to live here. Nearly 60% of households (110,000) in the City of Miami are forced to pay more than they can afford for their rent or mortgage, making them vulnerable to homelessness after an unforeseen expense or a rent hike.

Miami Homes For All remains committed to advocating for the housing and rights of all those experiencing homelessness. We believe the key to ending and preventing homelessness lies in collaboration across our whole community—that the public and private sectors and residents must come together to prioritize constructive solutions that address the social, economic, and health factors leading to homelessness. We also believe in partnering directly with those who have experienced homelessness first hand to help us better understand the problem and to foster solutions that benefit the entire community.
